The Australian Retailers United Limited (URL) is a self-governing and independent retail supermarket group that trades under the commonly known brand name of "FoodWorks".
The URL was first established back in November 2004, arising from the merger of the Australian United Retailers (AUR) and the FoodWorks Supermarket Group Ltd (FSG). FoodWorks is now regarded as Australia's second-biggest independently governed supermarket retailing group, which supports upwards of AUD 1.80 billion in annual revenue and sales at the retail level. FoodWorks's main competitors are Coles, Woolworths, Aldi and IGA.
FoodWorks came about primarily as a response to the rapid retail industry consolidation and therefore increased competition for consumers hard-earned dollars.
The organisation now has approximately 450 food and convenience stores and supermarkets that span the nation. Approximately 360 of this total number of stores operate solely under the FoodWorks brand. Foodworks have a vibrantly visible and conspicuous fresh orange and green logo signage and design.
Nowadays, FoodWorks prides itself on its fresh, yet contemporary approach to retail business operations, whilst maintaining a friendly, and community-focused connection with its consumers.
What is unique, is that every FoodWorks store is distinctive, and each store has its own sense of independence, which grants them the flexibility to customise their store to suit their location and the local community's retail needs.
