About Coles

Coles is one of Australia's leading retailers, comprising over 2,600 retail outlets nationwide. Coles's business moniker is to 'make life easier for Australians by delivering quality, value and service' to the approximately 22 million consumers who shop weekly with them. Coles Supermarkets Australia Pty Ltd, which formally trades as Coles, is headquartered in Melbourne, Victoria, and forms part of the entire Coles Group.

Over the past centenary, the Coles Group has developed from a simple variety store, to become Australia's very first supermarket, driving a complete retail brand portfolio to their consumers.

In 1914, Mr G.J. Coles opened the very first Coles store in Collingwood, Victoria. The prominent window display showed the following promise: 'There is nothing over 1/-.' Faced with such bargains, their first day's sales signified a genuine indication of business tidings to come, and after ten days of trading, takings stood at approximately 950 pounds - which was a considerable amount in those times.

These days, Coles employs over 100,000 staff, and accounts for approximately 30 per cent of the Australian supermarket retail business. Coles' corporate headquarters is located in Melbourne's inner-city CBD, and employs upwards of 4,500 people of their entire workforce.

Coles's eCommerce arm - Coles Online - is the company's online shopping channel (promoting their 'click & collect' also home delivery service). Notably, Coles Supermarkets was a former brand of Coles Myer Limited, before Wesfarmers acquired The Coles Group in 2006.
