A young electronics technician, who was fascinated with all things wiring and electrical, was inspired with a mere $600 investment and created the Dick Smith label we all are aware of and love. Initially, Dick Smith focused his enthusiasm and energies on fitting and maintaining car radios.
Proving a massive success with the car radio business, he then opened 'Dick Smith Wholesale' store, which provided an adult playground for all electronics hobbyists like himself. He sold a vast array of electronics components to both hobbyists and professionals alike. This all proved to be hugely successful.
By the 1980s, the organisation had grown to approximately 25 stores, and it was then that Dick Smith sold 60% of the company's shares to Woolworths Pty Ltd. Only two years later, he sold the remaining share balance to Woolworths, who rightly possessed full ownership of the company.
Dick Smith proceeded to add to his network of smaller mainstream stores in suburbia, and regional centres across Australia. One did not have to travel far to find the highly visible black-and-yellow retailer trading all the latest technical essentials.
Over the next two decades, hundreds of Dick Smith stores were operating across all of Australia, including many Electronic shops, situated within David Jones stores, and powered by Dick Smith stores.
In 2016, the Kogan.com Group acquired the entire Dick Smith brand name and took over all business operations. These days, Dick Smith continues as a household name compatible with excellent value. Electronics consumers can purchase the most dependable products at unbelievable prices from Dick Smith throughout Australia and New Zealand.
